AVI output stuck at 720x48
« on: September 30, 2011, 01:01:51 AM »
I’m a fairly new Max user and I’m having a very frustrating problem.  My avi output resolution is stuck at 720x480 no matter what output size I select in the render outputwindow.  Example: if I select 1280x720, when play the resulting avi, its 720x480.  It even appears at the correct resolution in the rendered window pane, just not inthe output avi.  This only seems to be the case for AVI output and not for still images, stills come out at the correct selected output resolution.
Am I missing a setting somewhere?  Can anyone help?

It is generally bad practice to render out a video file directly from a 3d app anyway - I would *highly* recommend rendering to an image sequence and then compiling this withanother tool after .
The number of reasons that you should do it this way are far too numerous to expand on . Trust me .

Max can do it itself - look into the Video Post feature.
If you want a free 3rd party app, look to Virtualdub.
Also, the “being stuck” at a certain size may be due to the codec you’re using - some have size/aspect ratio restrictions.

That is forced to be at standard definition video resolution. Using another codec will alow you to change it.

Thanks everybody, I wish I had found this forum sooner.  I’d been googling my question for a few days and not really finding any answers.
